Baby Body Butter

Sometimes I feel as if I put way too much thought into all things. I research and read and google and pinterest. And then I just get overwhelmed with all of the information and ideas that I have found.

“Dry Skin”

I did this when trying to find a natural, non-toxic lotion for my newborn baby. He has really dry skin, but the pediatrician has not deemed it eczema. At every check up in those first few months, the doctor would say, “I still notice he has dry skin” and would recommend name brand OTC lotions and creams to try. But those lotions with 100 ingredients that I can’t even pronounce were so off-putting. I just couldn’t make myself put that on my newborn baby!

So then began the journey to finding a good but simple, natural and moisturizing lotion. I tried just simple coconut oil, but it wasn’t enough alone. I read lots of blog posts and watched countless youtube videos. I jotted down all of the ingredients everyone else seemed to use. Some people used just 2 ingredients, some used 10! I wanted something in the middle. A happy medium in the way of a natural baby lotion.

“The Cure”

I tried a few different combinations until I finally found one that really seemed to cure his dry skin problem. I settled on just 4 simple ingredients with an easy no-brainer recipe. Then I whip it up to make it a fluffy body butter for my baby that leaves his skin feeling soo silky soft. The kind of baby skin you love kissing all over and snuggling up to. Ahh…soft skin baby cuddles!!

I love making this whipped baby body butter for my little one because I know exactly what ingredients are in it. It is super simple to make and works like a charm.

Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Shea butter
  • Cocoa butter

Directions:

  1. Combine equal parts of each ingredient using a double boiler to melt them together.
    • Note: I usually mix 1/4 cup of each, which makes enough to last me several months.
    • Tip: I like to combine ingredients in my mixer bowl over a pot of boiling water since I am going to use the mixer later to whip it. Just makes clean up easier.
    • Tip: The cocoa butter takes the longest to melt, so put it in first and let it start melting while measuring out the rest of the ingredients
  1. Once melted and combined, let it sit and cool.
    • Note: I often put it in the fridge for a few hours. If you leave it overnight, which I have done – then you can sit it out for an hour or so to soften back up a tad before whipping it. The timing of all this depends on the temperature of your house, obviously.
  1. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, whip up the mixture until nice and fluffy.
  1. Transfer to a glass container that you can easily scoop from.
  1. Snuggle up to your soft, cuddly baby.

Also worth noting…my husband and I laugh sometimes at how “yummy” he smells since the cocoa butter smells like chocolate.
